sTrapped 

Audition Notice

 

sTrapped by Dr. Arelia Johnson and Award-Winning Playwright Bryan-Keyth Wilson, is seeking Equity and Non-Equity actors for its Off-Broadway showcase at Playwrights Horizons on June 17th. We seek a diverse cast of actors of all ages, genders, and ethnicities to bring this powerful exploration of race and sexual identity to life.

 

All actors must submit a self-tape audition by April 15th, 2023. Please include a brief introduction, two contemporary monologues, one comedic and one dramatic, that showcases your acting range. Virtual rehearsals will begin April 26th, with in-person rehearsals scheduled for June 11th-16th in New York City. All actors must be available for virtual and in-person rehearsals and the performance on June 17th. All actors must be vaccinated and boosted.

 

Synopsis:

Strangers come to the theatre expecting to see Award-Winning playwright Bryan-Keyth Wilson’s new play about gun violence. They are told by the stage manager the performance is canceled. Tempers flare, and an omnipresent voice calms the audience. Interrogations begin, trauma and desires are uncovered as we learn about the strangers, and deeper conversations on sexuality, gender, religion, and colonization emerge.

 

Dramatis Personae:

 

DWAYNE - Black male in his 20’s. He is a gym owner looking for real love, someone that isn’t going to judge him for what he likes sexually. He is bisexual and believes in keeping his options open.

 

BELL - Black/Latinx non-binary in their 20’s. Very witty and cultured. Works in fashion marketing, and they heal from molestation as a child.

 

VEE - Black cis-gendered female lesbian in her 30’s. She is a highly sought OB-GYN and loves her patients and practice. She is brilliant but has intimacy issues with her wife.

 

PJ - Black cis-gendered male in his early 20’s. PJ is hyper-masculine and questioning his sexuality. He comes from an affluent family with a wanna-be rough/ dope boy mentality.

 

DYLAN - White cis-gendered male. He is a history professor at Texas Southern University and a hippy. His wife has recently died from breast cancer. He is into pegging.

 

SHARON - Black cis-gendered woman in her 30’s. She is an opera singer at Houston Grand Opera, a single mother, and HIV positive. She believed life would give her a perfect story like out of the fairytales, but she has struggled with being black in a racist career and now being a single mother living with HIV.

 

ASHLYNN - Latinx/ Afro-Latinx woman of trans experience in her 30’s. She is in her first year of law school at Thurgood Marshall. She loves Houston and being a trans advocate. She is getting comfortable with herself as a woman and is apprehensive about dating.

THE VOICE - Is the truth, God, The Light, Creator, Everlasting. This character has no gender and controls the conversation between the other characters.
